BORON NEUTRON CAPTURE THERAPY
Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a bi-modal anti-cancer therapy comprising a 10-boron agent and neutrons. The 10-boron agent is administered intravenously to the patient. The 10-boron agent is taken up by the tumor cells. The patient is irradiated with neutrons.
Upon neutron capture, the 10-boron nucleus decays to 7-lithium and 4-helium nuclei of high energy, which effectively destroy cancer cells within the range of a cell diameter. Both, 10-boron agents and neutrons applied for BNCT are virtually non-toxic. Moreover, decay products of the boron nucleus are characterized by short half-life times and ranges resulting in high-precision tumor cell eradication.
